The South Asian Canadian Legacy Project is coming to BC to enrich the undocumented history of South Asians in Canada.
The South Asian Canadian Legacy Project helps discover undocumented history by calling all South Asians to participate in an exhibition, bringing their pieces of history to incorporate into the archives.
Vancouver, BC – March 8, 2024
Following the success of the previous exhibition in Calgary, Alberta, the South Asian Canadian Legacy Project is proud to announce an upcoming exhibition happening here in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC). This exhibition will emphasize the archives found in Paldi, Vancouver Island, on the South Asian community and the impact they have had on the history of British Columbia. These archives tell the story of those people arriving from different parts of South Asia and the work they did that impacted the South Asian communities they built and the history of British Columbia. This exhibition aims to furthermore develop the archives with more stories from the South Asian communities in BC and across Canada. The founder of the project, Dr. Satwinder Kaur Bains, hopes to celebrate and encourage the South Asian community to be united and for visitors who attend the exhibition to bring in their own stories, photos, and historical knowledge so these South Asian Archives can help us gain more knowledge on the history that has previously been undocumented.
This exhibition will take place in Vancouver and will showcase the archives found in Paldi. They will show the contributions that have been made by South Asians which have impacted the development of British Columbia’s history. In addition to the documented archives previously found in Paldi, Vancouver Island, this exhibition hopes to invite more South Asians to share their stories, photos, and historical information about their settlement in Canada from South Asian countries to further develop the archives, as well as to gain knowledge on Paldi, and how it has shaped British Columbia. This project aims to teach information about the role South Asian people have played in British Columbia and to build a greater community as those are the only documented archives currently found in BC.
Dr. Satwinder Kaur Bains, the founder of this project, wants to emphasize the importance of showcasing the rich history of South Asians in British Columbia and Canada. Through exhibitions coordinated by the South Asian Canadian Legacy Project, people can gain more knowledge about South Asians and how the role they play defines history. “We want everyone to feel included to learn and contribute to the archives,” she adds, “By making these lost archives of very important history available, we can build bridges and discover the similar experiences that unite us as South Asians.” She also explains, “It was not easy for us to come to Canada and start a life in a different country, but we still did it and that is what matters, it should be documented for the sake of our identities and communities across Canada.”
The South Asian Canadian Legacy Project welcomes all South Asian Canadians to take part in this exhibition in Vancouver, British Columbia, which will give a chance for individuals who visit to connect with their roots and learn about the undocumented history of South Asians in British Columbia. With the only archives from Paldi, Vancouver Island, this exhibition will promote the growth of the history of South Asians in British Columbia, and this project hopes to add more stories of South Asians in the archives to document the unseen history. The founder of the project, Dr. Satwinder Kaur Bains, encourages visitors to bring their own stories, photographs, and historical knowledge to add to these archives to build bridges and help unite and build relationships among many more South Asians through these archives.
